Fire Safety and Prevention Tips
Fire Safety Tips for Home
- Test smoke alarms monthly and change the batteries at least once a year.
- Keep a fire extinguisher on every level of your home, especially in the kitchen.
- Plan and practice a home evacuation plan with all family members.
- Never leave cooking unattended and keep flammable materials away from stovetops.
Smoke Alarms and Carbon Monoxide Detectors
Ensure smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors are installed on every level of your home, inside bedrooms, and outside sleeping areas. Test them monthly, replace batteries yearly, and replace the units as recommended by the manufacturer.
Fire Escape Planning
Create a fire escape plan that includes two exits from every room and a meeting place outside your home. Practice the escape plan with all household members at least twice a year.
Seasonal Fire Safety
- Holiday Safety: Use flame-resistant or non-flammable decorations. Check holiday lights for frayed wires and always turn off lights before going to bed or leaving the house.
- Wildfire Season: Maintain a defensible space around your home by clearing away dry vegetation and flammable materials. Use fire-resistant materials for roofing and siding.
